COVID-19 virus hit hard. It was a bad year for everyone, especially for high school athletes looking to play at the collegiate level. Many athletes had to forfeit a year of high school and than forced to play at lower divisions.
However, with the bad comes the good. We awarded Khaliyl Davis of Portsmouth, VA with our first ‘Big Jern Athletic Scholarship.’
Davis was a high flyer at Wilson High School. During his senior year his team was one game away from the State Championship when the virus shut down the country. Davis unfortunately lost his offers and had to use his gap year to play at Tidewater Prep.
We named the athletic scholarship award after the late, Roderick Jernigan, also known as ‘Big Jern.’ Jernigan played a huge role in many Hampton Roads kids playing college basketball, and ultimately receiving college degrees.
We couldn’t think of a better way to honor Coach Jern than assisting a Hampton Roads kid with furthering their education while playing the game we all love.
