Balling On The River in Portsmouth

At Greenbox Foundation, we believe basketball is more than just a game—it’s a bridge. A bridge that connects people, organizations, and communities, inspiring the youth to aim higher both on and off the court. That belief brought us to Portsmouth, Virginia, where we teamed up with our friends at Big Homies Community Outreach for their 5th Annual Balling on the River.

The setting was straight out of a postcard, Festival Park, just steps away from the Elizabeth River, with sail boats and military ships in the distance, and a full basketball court perched on the water’s edge. Add in back-to-school giveaways from several organizations, bounce houses, free food, a warm community spirit, and you’ve got the perfect summer scene.

Our connection with Big Homies runs deep. We’ve known event organizer Mr. Swinson for over eight years, and just like a strong pick-and-roll, we’ve kept the connection tight. Swinson, who emceed the day, made witty jokes making the whole crowd laugh in between plays.

The day featured three basketball games that had something for everyone. A community game, featuring Portsmouth Recreation workers vs. the youth. The Elite Middle School game, where Norfolk’s Reck League faced off against the hometown Big Homies squad. Both teams brought energy and skill, but Reck League came out on top. Their lightning-fast guard, Tajuan Pair, sliced through defenders and finished strong at the rim, earning the MVP trophy (sponsored by us).

The High School game was a highlight reel. A co-ed matchup featuring some of Hampton Roads’ top talent, split evenly by Mr. Swinson. The game had it all, deep threes from the ladies, rim-rattling dunks from the high flyers, and constant back-and-forth action. In the end, the White Team pulled away, with Ben Wakadima taking home MVP honors and his trophy.

This game closed the day with plenty of laughs, competitive spirit, and a reminder that basketball truly has no age limit.

We’re grateful to Big Homies for letting us be part of an event that brings together so many different corners of the community. Days like this prove that when organizations link arms and sometimes lock up on defense amazing things can happen.

Here’s to more games, more connections, and more ways to jump through hoops for the communities we love.
